Why chocolate kills dogs? |
Chocolate is poisonous to dogs as it contains theobromine as well as caffeine. Both are used medicinally as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dilator, and a smooth muscle relaxant. Dog's metabolism can not digest neither theobromine nor caffeine.
Dark chocolates have most theobromine and caffeine, so you should not let your dog eat dark chocolate where as milk chocolates have negligible amount of these chemicals but still eating a lot of white chocolate cause vomiting and bad health of your dog.
What are the symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs?
The symptoms can take some time to appear, it can appears in few hours and can take a day to appear depending on size of dog and amount of chocolate ingested.
The common symptoms of chocolate poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, fast breathing, increased heart rate, seizures, hyperactivity, and inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). In severe cases, these can progress to heart failure, coma, and death.
What to do if my dog have eaten chocolates.
Symptoms can take time to appear, so you should not let your dog to sleep cause you will not able to monitor your dog behavior and mood. You should monitor your dog and if there's slightly of unusual behavior you should take your dog to veterinarian.
